Exciting Training for Community Leaders in the Works (Get on the Bus, Gus!)

Many older adults in Haywood County have been natural leaders and volunteers in their communities for decades. Others have retired and are now eager to share their skills. Still others have moved to the area and are interested in getting involved in addressing the needs of their neighbors and making local connections.

Haywood Community Connections is pleased to announce that training for the Haywood Community Partnership Senior Leadership program, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will begin this spring. The training is being designed by the Haywood County Connection staff with consultation by HCC instructor Marsha Crites, a local gerontologist, known throughout the region for her community and program development work.

The training will be experiential, including plenty of face to face experience with the people, culture and services of Haywood communities. Designed to identify and enhance the skills of volunteers who participate, “this will not be typical classroom training, “says HCC director Victoria Young

Riding Haywood transit, visiting meal sites, community clubs, experiencing local arts and traditions, and learning first hand about regional challenges will make this experience lots of interactive fun. “We anticipate the training will take place one morning a week for 10-12 weeks, says Young. “Come get on the bus and learn all about your Haywood County community and how to help local elders connect with the services they need to thrive at home.”

If you or your community club would like to participate in this community leadership initiative to help address the needs of elders in our county, contact Yvonne Gold at 452-2370 right away to reserve a spot for the next training.
