Volunteer Transportation System Being Organized
In a rural community the loss of the ability to drive can mean total isolation, a down- spiraling of health and ultimately institutionalization. We all need to shop for basic necessities like groceries, fill prescriptions, and get to medical appointments.
For just this reason, a number of communities around the nation are designing innovative transportation programs. Many of these pilot programs involve the faith-based community and general volunteerism in a gesture of community service. Haywood Community Connections has examined some success stories in other predominately rural areas and is in the process of initiating a program here.
Access to health care and supportive services, economic security and enjoying the full advantages of community life are important issues. Studies have shown that those able to remain in their own home as they age not only live longer, they have a higher quality of life and are happier. All citizens, whether young or old, people with comfortable resources or those just getting by, realize the importance of independence.
What makes this “Neighbor helping Neighbor” project different is it begins by uncovering the strengths that already exist in a community. This “Drive-a-Friend” Volunteer Transportation program is designed to augment the existing transit system through coordination of volunteer transportation teams. This is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. To learn how your church or civic organization can become involved in a program that is going to make Haywood County a truly special place to live, work and age, please call Haywood Community Connections at 452-2370.
